TURNKEY HD Shows up Strong at Shane Hurlbut’s HDDSLR Bootcamp

It was a cloudy Sunday morning when I showed up at Alternative Rentals in Culver City to participate in Shane Hurlbut's 1st HDDSLR boot camp. I didn't quite know what to expect. As soon as I pulled up I saw the catering truck, I realized that this boot camp was set up just like a pro shoot.

We ate some breakfast, split into groups and went to shoot in a nearby location. Shane's producer, Greg Haggart played 1st AD and ring leader for our group. It was quite a day, filled with challenging rigs and some growing pains from those students who were absorbing a ton of info from the bootcamp. Julie Togerson, Shane's Best Boy Grip was assigned to help TURNKEY and do most of the rigging for the students. She is a real asset to any production. Julie asked me for a good amount of rigging gear and I can say with pride I didn't have to say no to her...ever. She was using gobo heads, c-stands, cardellinis, c-clamps with baby spuds, offset arms and all your usual arsenal of grip and lighting that comes on the Sprinter. One of the more exciting parts was watching Julie rig those small Canon cameras all over the place. Up high attached to a trellis, down low on the floor and some cool hand held rigs as well. They even used our 6-step ladder at one point as a tri-pod.

One of the most interesting aspects of the bootcamp was the collaborative spirit that we yearn for on every shoot. All the teams and the vendors worked together with a common goal. TURNKEY HD was there with other companies such as Red Rock Micro, Zeiss, Canon, and Alternative Rentals (home base). Strong bonds form lasting relationships in this business and we are sure that the bootcamp members will be working together in the future if geographic opportunity presents itself. TURNKEY HD enjoyed working with the Elite team and hope to do it again sometime soon.
